The Corn Maze: Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q: What is a corn maze ?

A corn maze is like any maze you would see on paper except the design is set in a cornfield. Instead of solving the maze with a pencil, a corn maze is life-size and you find your way by walking the trails that are cut into the cornfield. In our maze, visitors must find a series of checkpoints as they navigate the trails through the tall corn. Corn Mazes only last a few months before the plants dry out and are harvested.

  • Q: How do the Shryocks create the corn maze?

We design our corn mazes on a computer using a spatial management program. When the corn is about two feet tall the maze design is then transferred to the cornfield using global positioning technology. We have obtained permission to use all licensed logos and pictures in our maze designs.

  • Q: How long does it take to get through the maze?

A: About an hour and a half. Groups will take longer. For slower visitors it is a good idea to allow two hours to get through the maze. Also, it takes about two hours to get through the maze during Flashlight Nights because it is easier to become disoriented.

  • Q: Will someone come and find me if I get lost in the maze ?

A: Maze workers periodically walk through the maze to assist visitors. Trail maps are printed on your ticket to help you on your way. Children 12 and under should ALWAYS be accompanied by an adult.

  • Q: What kind of clothes and shoes should I wear to the maze?

A: Dress for the maze like you would for any other outdoor activity. Make sure you have a sweatshirt on cool days or a rain jacket if the forecast dictates. There is not any shade in the maze, so it's a good idea to wear a hat on sunny days. Remember that you will be in a cornfield and even though the trails are compact, your footwear will get dirty. Depending on your walking pace and the size of your group you could be in the maze for a couple of hours. Also, don't forget the sunscreen!
